Robert L. Antolak

Robert L. Antolak, age 89, a Chicago native and longtime resident of Elmhurst, passed away on April 1, 2025. His later years (2017-current) were spent at Casa San Carlo where he enjoyed the friendly and caring community there. The youngest of 11 children, Bob is pre-deceased by his siblings and in his own way became the mainstay of his extended family. Fond uncle and great-uncle of many nieces andnephews, affectionately known to many as “Uncle Bob”. He had a long career at Mt. Sinai Medical Center until retiring as Director of Admitting. Bob enjoyed life by cooking, sharing a good meal, traveling, loving dogs, and keeping us laughing. He loved entertaining at his home in Elmhurst, known as “219” , that he shared with his three brothers Stan, Ed and Joe. Friday night soirees and Christmas Eve traditional Polish dinners (Wigilia) with his famous mushroom soup were looked forward to by all who attended. He was well traveled. Whether by train, plane or automobile he enjoyed the experience of seeing new places, meeting new people and of course sampling the regional cuisine. He had a natural affinity for animals. Growing up his family always had dogs and throughout his life he loved caring for them – Helga, Gypsy, Ursula, Basia, Sophie, Stella, and Stanley. For a time the “219” sunroom was filled with canaries and referred to as the Antolak Aviary. As a Scrabble enthusiast he competed in local clubs and national tournaments. He hosted Scrabble parties in his Elmhurst home and continued hosting Scrabble at the Casa on Sunday afternoons. With his warm-hearted ways and jovial spirit, Uncle Bob had the ability to be positive and comfortable around people from all walks of life. He was funny, generous, intelligent, intuitive and loving. He touched many peoples’ lives and he will be missed.  In lieu of flowers, the family encourages you to honor Bob with a random act of kindness. Please share

What a beautiful tribute you gave Bob. I’m sure he’s delighted with your description of him…you truly captured him. Bob was my parents neighbor on Arlington, Elmhurst, and he was so, so good for them.
He would water their lawn for them while out of town, and Bob was so good about it, always happy to do it, and it was a big yard. He loved sitting out in his yard and making conversations with neighbors and passer bys. He was really special, kind and funny. It was an honor to know him and to have him in the hood’ was so fortunate for us all. God bless you all, his family for honoring Bob. He touched us all!

I am so sorry to hear of Bob’s passing. I was a close friend of Bob’s for many, many years. When I was young, he would come to our house and play cards with my parents. Bob was a wonderful person. I would talk to him periodically when he was ill, and even when he was in the hospital, I received a call from Bob. He asked me to call him when he was still in the hospital. I didn’t call him when he was in the hospital, because I knew he was pretty ill. I am going to miss talking to Bob every once in a while. I worked with Bob Mt. Sinai in the Admitting office. I am sure he is up in heaven with all his doggies.

Oh My Bob..I’m sorry you are not in our world any more..it made memories remain real. We had some times at Mt Sinai..we should have written that book…even though no one would probably believe it. Your lust for good food was wonderful because we could try so many places. We really had a time of it. How you loved your Scrabble, it took you to many places and lotsa fun. Your love of the dogs was fun too., but just the wonderful memories and fun we had made working in a difficult field tolerable. RIP Polish Prince..you are now whole again and safe in the arms of Our Lord!!! SURE!!

I am one of Uncle Bob’s nieces. I loved your phrase, “It made memories remain real”! Uncle Bob was the poster boy for wholesome living. He loved to dance, to have fun and to eat-traits he passed on to me! Uncle Bob loved life! I also love your calling him “Polish Prince”. Thank you for all of your comforting words.

Bob’s kitchen was as warm as his heart. His dedication to his family was equally rivaled by his love and care for his dogs. I especially remember Gypsy, Ursula, and my favorite Basha. Other than remembering him in the kitchen, seeing him in his robe taking the dogs out for a quick trot in the morning will always bring a smile.
He was a great neighbor to my grandparents and my family always called them the South Poles because they lived one door to the south on Arlington.
I will never forget his infectious smile. A life well lived and a job well done, you made a difference.
    R.I.P. Bob
