Robert James “Bob” Nugent

Robert James “Bob” Nugent, 90, passed away on February 18th, at Elmhurst Hospital after a brief illness. Born August 26, 1934 in Chicago to Robert Brendan Nugent of Ballinkina, Co.  Waterford, Ireland and Belinda (Kennedy) Nugent of Cullens, Co. Sligo, Ireland, he enjoyed his Irish heritage. Bob was the beloved husband of the late Helen, nee McMahon; loving father of Mary (Patrick) Twigg of Champaign, IL, Theresa Nugent of Chicago, IL, Kathleen Nugent of Bellwood, IL, Anne Nugent of Forrest, IL and Maureen Nugent of Downers Grove, IL; proud grandfather of Brendan Likes of Fairbury, IL; dear brother of the late Eileen (the late Patrick) Noonan, Michael (the late Judy) Nugent and Kathleen (the late Jack) Thompson; fond uncle of many nieces and nephews. Bob attended Resurrection Grammar School and St. Mel High School on Chicago’s west side. He served in the US Army from 1956-1958 as an Ordinance Parts Specialist in the 10th AAA Battalion at Fairchild Air Force Base, Spokane, Washington. He was employed by the Chicago Transit Authority from 1958 – 1993, where he was a bus driver, motorman, supervisor, and ticket agent. He worked hard to provide a Catholic education for his daughters. He married the love of his life Helen McMahon on August 22, 1959. They moved to Bellwood in 1963 and there remained until his death. He will be missed by his caretaker of the past seven years, Maria Andrzeyczak. Bob greatly enjoyed automobiles; he owned over 60 vehicles starting with his 1941 Plymouth to his 1972 Plymouth Road Runner and lastly his 2006 Cadillac DTS. In his spare time, he was always tinkering under the hood or going to car museums. He enjoyed dancing and music including Irish and opera. When stationed in Spokane he often went to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, to the dances at the Lake. Upon returning from his service in the Army he met Helen McMahon at a dance at his Catholic parish. He also enjoyed reading, especially about history, Catholicism, and automobiles. In the 1970’s he attended Triton College on the G.I. Bill to study auto mechanics. After retirement, he twice traveled to Ireland to see his father and mother’s homesteads and meet his cousins. Visitation Sunday, February 23, 2025, 3:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Gibbons Funeral Home, (½ mile North of Saint Charles Road), Elmhurst. Friends and family will meet Monday, February 24, 2025, for a Mass of Christian Burial beginning at 10:00 a.m. at Visitation Catholic Church, 779 South York Road (at Madison), Elmhurst. Interment Queen of Heaven Catholic Cemetery, Hillside. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of
