Jerome E. “Jerry” Sobieraj

Jerome E. “Jerry” Sobieraj, age 95, Elmhurst, formerly of Taylor, MI; beloved husband of the late Roberta “Bobbie”; loving father of James (Jacquelyn), Jerome MD (Janet MD), Jeffrey (Carmen), Jane (Gene) Evans, and late infant John; proud grandfather of Julia (Christopher) Estenssoro, Olivia Sobieraj, Stephanie and Jocelyn Sobieraj, Tania (Greg) Schram, Jeffrey and Alexandra Sobieraj and Katherine, Sheila and Molly Evans; cherished great-grandfather of Hayden and Tristan Schram; dear brother to 9 deceased siblings; and fond uncle of many nieces and nephews. Jerry was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Army. Afterward, he obtained an engineering degree from the Lawrence Institute of Technology. He began his career as an automotive engineer at Chrysler Corporation, and then spent 35 years at General Motors. A t the General Motors Fleetwood plant, he met the love of his life, Bobbie. They were married for nearly 65 years. They settled in Taylor, Michigan, where they raised their children. He and Bobbie traveled extensively, visiting over 75 countries and all 50 states, and were quite the dancing duo at weddings and parties. Jerry was widely respected for his intellect, integrity, unselfishness, trustworthiness and humility. He often accepted calls to serve in leadership positions by the pastors of St. Alfred Church in Taylor, where he and Bobbie were active members. He also served as the president of the Taylor Northwest Little League. He easily made friends with his warm, engaging personality, and maintained those friendships for life. Everyone enjoyed his company and joie de vivre. Visitation will be held on Friday, October 20, 2023, 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 pm and on October 21, 2023, 8:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. at Gibbons Funeral Home, 134 South York Road, (½ mile North of Saint Charles Road), Elmhurst. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 9:30 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Interment Private.
