William J. “Bill” McGinnis

William J. “Bill” McGinnis, age 74, of Elmhurst, Illinois, passed away on March 1, 2022, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born on May 10, 1947, in Chicago, Illinois, to the late
Francis and Helen (O’Connor) McGinnis, he attended St. Pascal Grammar School, St. Patrick High School (Class of 1965), University of Dayton, and Illinois Benedictine College. He raised
his family in Elmhurst, where he was instrumental in building Visitation School into the powerhouse basketball program it is today, all the while making the long commute to Abbott
Labs, from which he retired in 2012. Faith, family and friends meant everything to Bill, and, depending on the year, so did the Bears and the Cubs. His travels took him from Puerto Rico to Ireland to Germany to China, and, later in life, to the shores of Lake Michigan via Long Beach, Indiana. He cheered on the Dayton Flyers just as hard as the Illinois Fighting Illini, the Duke Blue Devils, and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. He could always be found at baseball/basketball/soccer/football/hockey games, dance performances and school events cheering on his five cherished grandchildren. He never knew a stranger and would always make you feel welcomed. He would do anything for a laugh and never miss an opportunity to tell you that he was 100% certified Irish per AncestryDNA. Anyone that truly knew him, knew he had such a big heart. He would give you anything even if it wasn’t his to give. Survivors include: sons Michael (Kellie), Kevin and Ryan (Melissa) McGinnis; grandchildren Thomas, Caroline, John “Jack,” Danielle and Makaela; brother and sisters Francis (Mary Fran), Eileen (Ray Murton) McGinnis and Nancy (Russell) Harsla; former spouse Diane McGinnis; longtime companion Terri Vertovec; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and countless friends. Visitation Sunday, March 6, 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., and Monday, March 7, 8:00 a.m. until time of prayers 9:00 a.m., at Gibbons Funeral Home, 134 S. York Rd. (½ mile north of St. Charles Rd.), Elmhurst. Mass of Christian Burial Monday, 10:00 a.m., at Visitation Catholic Church. Interment private.
