Catherine “Kay” Swansen

Catherine “Kay” Swansen, nee Scaletta, age 93, resident of Elmhurst for over 66 years; passed away peacefully at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital. Kay was born at home, in Chicago to Salvatore “Sam” and Salvadora “Dora”, nee Comparetto, Scaletta, and where she met Calvin Swansen I. As a young girl in grade school, she saw him from the front porch and said, “That’s the guy I’m going to marry,” and she did on September 20, 1952, at St. Genevieve Church in Chicago.  In 1955, they moved to Elmhurst and started a family.  She was an active mother involved with the PTA and scouts and enjoyed taking her children to the Cubs games during the day, while her husband took them to the Chicago White Sox games at night. Kay was a talented seamstress and cook and enjoyed teaching her daughters, granddaughters, and great-granddaughters how to make ravioli. Her cannoli and pupa cu l’ova were just like her mother’s. Delicious! Kay was the beloved wife of the late Calvin Swansen I; loving mother of Doris Ann (the late Joel) Fisher, Charmaine Boswell and Calvin (Paula) Swansen II; cherished grandmother of  Ashley (Mark) Taylor and Christina Boswell and  great-grandmother of Fiona Coulson and Sadie Taylor; dear sister of the late Joseph (the late Jean) Scaletta and Philip Scaletta; fond double-cousin, of Jean Bianco and aunt of Kathleen Scaletta, Sandra (the late Lee) Peterson, Daniel Scaletta, Sharon (Pete) Barber, Debra Smith, Philip Scaletta and the late Stephen Scaletta.  Visitation and Funeral Services will be Private for family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis TN 38105.  Arrangements handled by Gibbons Funeral Home, Elmhurst. 630-832-0018 or www.gibbonsfuneralhome.com
