William T. Payne

William T. Payne, age 103, a resident of Lexington Square of Elmhurst; Bill was born and raised in the Montclare area of Chicago and attended St. Ignatius High School, class of 1929. Bill was a Captain on the Chicago Police force until his retirement in 1968 when he became the Police Chief of Elmhurst and served until 1978. Bill was the beloved husband of the late Ardele, nee Beberger, for over 74 years; loving father of Tom (Jean) and the late William J (Joan Ward); proud grandfather of Tom and Dave (Tina) and great-grandfather of Jack and Ford; dear brother of the late Vernyle (Dan) Stone and Marion (Phillip) Campbell; fond uncle of Lynn (Lennart) Barkinge, Craig (Jo) Campbell, William (Bonnie) Stone and Terry Stone; cherished son of the late Jule, nee Botheroyd and the late Joseph. As a child of the depression, during his early years Bill’s days (and many nights) were full of second and third jobs surrounded by club basketball, football and acting in local plays. In later years his pursuits turned to golf, bowling and his grandchildren. Visitation Tuesday, June 24, 2014 from 8:00 a.m. until time of funeral 10:00 a.m. at Gibbons Funeral Home 134 South York Road, (½ mile North of St. Charles Road ), Elmhurst. Mass of Christian Burial 10:45 a.m at Visitation Catholic Church. Interment Private .
